They worked the Sunday fishing charter for Jim Peterson, and it went well. Huck made the most heavenly sandwiches for them all, and Kelsey savored every morsel.

She worked the lines while they left the dock, and helped Huck a little in the kitchen. She set up the meal for the fishermen to come into the cabin and eat, which they did in shifts, always a couple manning the fishing lines.

They were serious fisherman, but Huck told her those charters were sometimes just a big party, with hardly any lines cast into the water.

He was telling her this while Jim was in the galley with them, seeming to glean as much information from Huck on what to expect from various charters as Kelsey did.

“A lot of times,” he said as he put the sandwich meats back in the refrigerator, “these guys tell their wives they’re going fishing, but it’s really just an excuse to get drunk with the boys.”

“Nobody says anything when they come back with no fish?” Kelsey asked.

“Even serious fishermen strike out.”

“They can’t just say ‘Honey, I’m having a boys’ weekend. We’re going to get drunk on a boat. See you Monday’ or something like that?”

She knew it was for Jim’s benefit, but still she liked it when Huck rounded the counter, came to stand in front of her, and leaned down to her face. “Are you telling me that’s all I’ll need to do with you, darlin’?”

“Yeah, that’s all you’d need to do,” she answered, not quite able to keep the breathiness out of her voice.

He planted a big kiss on her and then returned to his task. Over his shoulder to Jim, he said, “Do I have the best wife ever, or what?”

Jim laughed and nodded, but studied Kelsey.

“Just don’t say it to me too often,” she added, which made both Jim and Huck laugh, her husband flashing her that devastating smile.

And even though the winds were brisk on Lake Superior, she suddenly felt very warm inside.
